Ten Years Later...

It was ten years ago today that I joined Microsoft as a full time employee.  When I started we were just finishing Windows 98.  Microsoft was around 25,000 employees.  My first job was testing DVD playback in the operating system.  Since then I've reported to 5 managers, resided in 5 buildings, occupied 8 different offices, and shipped 6 operating systems.  I also had a hand in shipping several versions each of IE, Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Center.  Ten years later, something like 17 products under my belt, and I'm still having fun.  I guess I chose the right profession.

  2. Do you have any idea why Microsoft won't say which patents they think we violated?

  3. Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary. I strongly believe that if you're going to be spending a third of your life doing something, it better be something you enjoy doing. What a miserable life it must be -- I wouldn't know -- to wake up and not look forward to what the day at work might bring.
If I go to work for a week and don't walk in with a spring in my step at least one of those days, it's time to find another job.  I'm glad you've found a decade of fun, engaging, challenging, enjoyable, fascinating work.
And bonus: I hear they pay you for it, too.

  4. That is awesome.  Congrats Steve.
What is it gonna be tomorrow?  M&M's? Jelly Beans?
I, for one, would recommend 10 lbs of raw tofu.

  7. As alluded to above, it is a tradition for major anniversaires to bring in a number of pounds of candy as the number of years you are at Microsoft.  I brought 5 pounds of Runts and 5 pounds of Hot Tamales.  In 2 days, all the runts and over half of the Hot Tamales have been consumed.  So much for anyone on my floor trying to diet.
